How do I trim an MP3 without losing quality?

Updated:

Open the Audio Trimmer, drop the MP3, drag the handles around the part you want and press Trim audio. As long as you keep the MP3 format and add no fades, the audio is copied without re-encoding, so the quality stays exactly the same.

What are the steps?

  1. Open the Audio Trimmer and drop the MP3 file into the box.
  2. Drag the handles on the waveform, or type exact start and end times.
  3. Press play to preview the selection.
  4. Leave the output format as the source (MP3) and the fades off for a lossless cut.
  5. Press Trim audio, listen to the result and download it.

Why isn’t the cut exactly where I put it?

A lossless MP3 cut moves to the nearest MP3 frame, about 26 ms away. Turn on “Exact cut” for a sample-accurate cut; that re-encodes the audio.

When is the MP3 re-encoded?

When you add a fade in or fade out, turn on Exact cut or save in another format. Re-encoding at a high bitrate is hard to hear, but the file is no longer a bit-for-bit copy.

Can I trim WAV, M4A and other files too?

Yes. WAV files are also cut without re-encoding, and M4A, FLAC, OGG and other common formats work as well.
