How do I find the BPM of a song?

Updated:

Open the BPM & Key Finder and drop the song. A few seconds later you see the tempo in beats per minute, the key, its Camelot code and the relative key. Use Tap tempo to check the beat by ear.

What are the steps?

  1. Open the BPM & Key Finder and drop a song (MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC or OGG).
  2. Wait a few seconds while your browser analyzes the beat and the harmony.
  3. Read the tempo in BPM; half time and double time are shown under it.
  4. Read the key, its Camelot code and the relative key.
  5. Tap along with Tap tempo if you want to double-check the beat.

How accurate is the BPM?

For songs with a steady beat the tempo is usually exact to within a fraction of a BPM. Some songs can be heard in half or double time, so both numbers are shown and you pick the one that fits.

What is the Camelot code?

It is the DJ notation for keys on the Camelot wheel. Songs with the same or neighboring codes, for example 8A with 8B, 7A or 9A, mix together without clashing.

Why does another app show a different key?

Songs that change key or have little harmony can be read differently. A relative key, such as A minor and C major, uses the same notes, so tools often swap the two.

Can I find the BPM of a song from Spotify or YouTube?

Not from a link: the finder needs an audio file on your device. Save the song as MP3, WAV or M4A and drop it here. After the analysis you can also tap along with Tap tempo.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Open the page in Safari or Chrome and pick the song from your files. The analysis runs in the browser, so the song never leaves your phone.
