How do I test my microphone?
Updated:
Open the Mic Test, press Test my microphone and allow access. Speak: if the level meter moves and the page says your microphone works, it is picking you up. Record a 5-second test to hear exactly how you sound.
What are the steps?
- Open the Mic Test in your browser.
- Press Test my microphone and allow microphone access when the browser asks.
- Speak normally and watch the level meter: it should move and the check should turn green.
- If you have several microphones, pick another one from the list and compare.
- Press Record a 5-second test and play it back to hear how you sound.
Why is my microphone not working?
Most often the browser is not allowed to use it, another microphone is selected, or it is muted. Allow access from the icon in the address bar, pick the right device in the list and check the mute switch on your headset.
How do I allow the microphone on Windows or Mac?
On Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and turn on microphone access for apps and desktop apps. On a Mac, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and switch on your browser.
How do I allow the microphone on iPhone or Android?
On iPhone, tap aA in Safari’s address bar, open Website Settings, allow the microphone and reload the page. In Chrome on Android, tap the icon left of the address, open Permissions and allow the microphone.
What is a good microphone level?
When you speak normally, the meter should mostly stay between −30 and −12 dB. If it hits the red end, the sound clips; if it barely moves, move closer or raise the input volume.
How will I sound on Zoom, Teams or Discord?
Turn on “Call processing (as in video calls)”. It adds the echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain that calling apps use, so the test sounds like the people on the call will hear you.
