How do I convert WAV to MP3?

Updated:

Open the WAV to MP3 converter, drop the WAV, choose a bitrate and press Convert. A 192 kbps MP3 is about 7 times smaller than a CD-quality WAV and sounds the same to most listeners. The file never leaves your device.

What are the steps?

  1. Open the WAV to MP3 converter.
  2. Drop the WAV file into the box, or tap the box to choose it.
  3. Choose a quality: 320 kbps for music you keep, 192 kbps for everyday use, 128 kbps for speech.
  4. Press Convert and wait a few seconds.
  5. Listen to the MP3 and download it.

How much smaller will the MP3 be?

A CD-quality WAV takes about 10 MB per minute and a 192 kbps MP3 about 1.4 MB, roughly 7 times smaller. At 128 kbps it is about 10 times smaller.

Will I hear a difference?

At 192 kbps and above, most people cannot tell an MP3 from the WAV on normal speakers or headphones. Keep the WAV if you still plan to edit or master the recording.

Are 24-bit and 32-bit WAV files supported?

Yes. 16, 24 and 32-bit WAV files work, including floating point and RF64 files from recorders and audio software.

Can I convert WAV to MP3 on my phone?

Yes. Open the converter in Safari or Chrome and pick the WAV from Files or your file manager. The MP3 is saved to your downloads.

Why convert a WAV at all?

WAV files are large: a ten-minute recording is about 100 MB, too big for many email and chat apps. As an MP3 it fits almost anywhere.
