How do I extract audio from a video?

Updated:

Open the Audio Extractor, drop the video and keep “Same as source”, then press Extract audio. The audio track is copied out unchanged, for example AAC into an M4A file, so there is no quality loss. The Audio Extractor is part of Pro; a plain MP3 is free on the MP4 to MP3 page.

What are the steps?

  1. Open the Audio Extractor (Pro) and drop a video: MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM or MKV.
  2. Keep “Same as source” to copy the audio track without re-encoding.
  3. Or choose MP3, WAV or another format if you need one.
  4. Press Extract audio.
  5. Listen to the result and download it.

What does “Same as source” mean?

The audio inside the video is copied into its own file as it is, without decoding and encoding again. An MP4 usually gives an M4A, a WebM often gives Opus or Vorbis audio.

Is there a free way to get the audio?

Yes. The MP4 to MP3 and Video to MP3 pages are free and save the sound as MP3 at the quality you pick. The Extractor adds lossless copies, other formats and batches.

Which video formats work?

MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV. Older formats such as AVI and WMV are not supported.

Can I extract audio from a video on my phone?

Yes. Open the page in Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android and pick the video from your gallery. The video is read by the browser and never uploaded.

Can I extract only part of the audio?

Extract the whole track first, then continue in the Audio Trimmer and keep only the part you need.
